Sometimes I just need to be a bird
Photographic Poem
A little narrative poem along with a photographic work documenting the day-to-day reality of a pandemic.

Sometimes I just need to be a bird
Sometimes I like to go out on my balcony to hear the wind howl
Sometimes I feel too trapped, like a plant in a bowl whose roots need to be impregnated by the confined soil
Sometimes I linger in this limbo of stone and dream that I'm a bird
I dream that I am a brown bird, flying among the squalls of freedom
And it's funny, because see, when I come back to the perch, I feel like I never really came back
I feel like I'm still wandering aimlessly somewhere in the stratosphere, a bird without a flock
Breathing whatever is left to breathe
Sometimes I just need to be a bird for a small eternity.
- Vasco Gil
This poem was later used in my project “Catarse” as a part of the storytelling.
I wrote this during a country lockdown, taking in that concept of catharsis and the feeling of enclosure.
Later I combined that text with some photos I’ve taken documenting the day-to-day individual reality of a pandemic lockdown.
